Applying the 'BEHAVE'
Framework" was an opportunity for managers and staff of health
projects to experience how a behavioral framework can aid them in
planning their project strategically. The workshop
was based on the BEHAVE Framework as found in the most recent version
of the Child Survival Grants
Program Technical Reference Materials.
Sixty-one participants
from 18 organizations and eight countries attended the workshop.
The Social and
Behavior Change Working Group identified several objectives for the
workshop. Presentations and activities were planned so that by the
end of the workshop, participants would be able to:
- Describe the
four strategic planning decisions of the BEHAVE Framework:
- Priority
and Supporting Groups
- Behavior
- Key Factors
- Activities
- Describe their
own programs in terms of the four decisions of the BEHAVE Framework
- Plan and critique
programs that apply behavioral theory
- Adapt for their
own program planning a quick, participatory method – the Doer/Non-Doer
Analysis – for identifying factors most influential in changing
a behavior
- Identify appropriate
indicators for monitoring and evaluating the behavior change effectiveness
of their programs

The workshop blended
presentations on the Framework with small group sessions in which
participants could immediately apply what they had learned. Lectures
illustrated how the Framework can be and has been used in various
settings to plan health behavior change
interventions.
Participants then worked on case studies in which they created their
own frameworks for their chosen area. At the end of the week, groups
prepared a poster representing their framework and shared it with
the larger group.
One of the week's
highlights included field visits to several project sites. Participants
were able to visit a project area from either World Vision or ADRA
and speak with groups of village health volunteers, mothers, and health
care workers.

This is the second
field workshop sponsored by the CORE Social and Behavior Change working
group. The content of this week-long workshop closely followed the
content of the previous "BEHAVE" workshop in South Africa
in 2002.
