WHY
CREATE A VIRTUAL RESOURCE CENTER FOR PVOs/NGOs AND NGOS? |
In
response to the major burden of HIV/AIDS on many poor nations,
an increasing number of PVOs/NGOs in the Child Survival and Health
Grants Program are engaged in HIV-related activities. There
are thousands of HIV/AIDS publications available on the Internet.
However, many PVO/NGO staff do not have the time or the resources
to navigate through them and identify programmatically useful
materials. To facilitate PVO/NGO access to state-of-the-art
HIV/AIDS technical information, CSTS+, in collaboration with
the CORE HIV/AIDS Working Group, has developed the HIV/AIDS
Virtual Resource Center for PVOs/NGOs and NGOs (VRC). The
VRC is not designed to be the end point in your quest for information,
but rather the entry point to a host of resources that can assist
you in designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating your
HIV/AIDS activities. It has a "one-stop shopping" appeal that
will save PVOs/NGOs and NGOs time in locating relevant information,
and it will help users stay up-to-date on the latest developments.

FEATURES
OF THE VRC |
The VRC provides
PVO/NGO users with the following:
Access
to technical guidelines, best practices, and other state-of-the-art
information We've created a listing of selected
web-based resources from various agencies and institutions.
To make your navigation easier, we've organized them into
specific categories and sub-categories. Just click on the
hyperlinks to gain access to those resources.
- Information on M&E indicators For
most sub-categories, we've listed the standard monitoring
and evaluation (M&E) indicators recommended by UNAIDS
and UNGASS.
- Access to HIV/AIDS data A useful feature
of the VRC is the option to calculate the UNAIDS and UNGASS
indicators using actual HIV/AIDS data. The data come from
the Demographic and Heath Surveys (DHS) and other large-scale,
population-based assessments included in the HIV/AIDS Survey
Indicators Database.
- Access to other useful information such
as the following:
- Daily
HIV updates from the Kaiser Foundation
- Information
on upcoming conferences, meetings, and workshops
- UNAIDS
Best Practices
- Funding
information
- The
International HIV/AIDS Alliance's NGO/CBO HIV/AIDS Support
Toolkit
- Glossary
of AIDS-related technical terms
- Information
on agencies that provide HIV/AIDS technical assistance
The VRC also has a Featured Country section that highlights the
nature of the epidemic, VRC technical resources, and Child Survival
and Health Grants Program activities for a particular country.
The featured country will change on a regular basis.

THE
VRC'S RELATION TO OTHER USEFUL TOOLS |
The VRC is
not designed to be a clearinghouse for all materials related
to HIV/AIDS. As mentioned in the first section of this introduction,
it is simply a tool to facilitate PVO/NGO access to HIV resources.
We encourage you to consult other useful tools such as the following:
